That would make RXB a bit too much like The Mars Volta.

I seriously hope not, because THAT is a huge insult upon listener's intelligence, and for me what distinguishes rx from all other bands.
so

you just watch as we raise a sea of fish that don't know how to feel
you just watch
for a moment, things come into focus

Really? An insult?

I think everyone is overanalyzing this. What I'm saying is, yeah, they come to the board with strange ideas, but I really just don't see matt sitting there thinking, "oh yeah, let me use this REALLY OBSCURE THING that represents this ONE REALLY OBSCURE THING from this REALLY OBSCURE PART OF HISTORY OR ART..."

Of course they're going to put in twists and turns on words and meanings and all of that, but I just really, really, doubt that they're all about any of these things you're getting at.

Like, for example, when I look at this lyric I really feel like he is referencing probably just a woman taking on the form of a minotaur. We all know a minotaur is the body of a man, but let's put a twist on that, eh? It might have a meaning past that, but if it's something particularly obscure that is hard for you internet savvy scourers to uncover, then I almost think it might be coincidence. AND alliteration since the album is full of it.

I think Manadala is much more lyrically honest than previous albums -- I think this album is more about life experiences and love as opposed to political (and drug) references full of double meaning that we've seen previously.

And it's all what it means to YOU anyway. Let the music move you.
If not now... If not now, when?

Kari,
Homer is perhaps the greatest writer of Greek mythology and he is by no means obscure, at least to the educated. It can be argued that analysis of the lyrics is at the very least entertaining, and sometimes very revealing. While it may not appeal to you personally, it does most certainly appeal to others and it is very important to take this into consideration.

Well I don't appreciate my interpretation of these lyrics is considered an insult. And the implications regarding my intelligence because I'm not hung up on fucking literary references. Or any references.

Take it as you will. I just won't contribute MY OPINION anymore.

Practice what you preach. Take my opinion into consideration.

But we, the members of the board, greatly appreciate your opinion and in no way condone its remittance. For what it's worth, I'd appraise your opinion at way more than the industry standard two cents, may even four cents and some times five!!

Ok, you for sure take things tooooooo personally and this post proved it. No one at any point at all said that your interpretation of anything was wrong or insulting. The idea was brought up that Rxb's lyrics were written for their fans to read and expand their minds and that if they simply wrote lyrics just for the sake of writing them that THAT was an insult. And when you made your initial statements you were contradicting some people's interpretation by saying that people were "overanalyzing" the lyrics. But as soon as someone contradicts you, you get in defense mode and act like your being attacked when all thats happening is people discussing the topic at hand and your remarks. No one here is trying to be an asshole except for the people who go out of their way to be, and we all know who those people are. You have good thoughts and are a big part of this forum so please dont stop posting and contributing, but just try not to over re-act to certain things.
An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.

When I heard that lyric, I figured it was a reference to the maids that were to be fed to the minotaur of mythology...

I felt like maybe that meant that the relationship there was one that was useless, as the maid would be gone in a short time. That sort of tied into the line: "Used to look the other way, and say it was love, when she was just someone to waste your time with."

It seems like there should be something else to it, though; since it's such a specific reference.

Lyrics are very interesting to me in the sense that their method, means, incentive for conception vary immensely between individuals, bands, songs, albums...

In think it may be possible that Matt was aware of the minotaur symbolism and may have summoned it through a stream of consciousness means to translate his feelings towards the relationship he's describing. This explains the fluid manner in which he jumps from idea to idea without necessarily substantiating each idea because perhaps the ideas do not stand independently, only as a whole, which would make sense in this instance.

Fun to think about these things, as the men who make these songs, as all men, are very complex and substantial. Speaking of these things does not necessarily aim to "discover hidden secrets" but more to embrace this complexity and substance.
