Production Value

Okay so it's been quite awhile since anyone has discussed the masterful nuances of this incredibly elaborate disc and I for one thought that we had found everything there was to find. However, I took a little time tonight and set up a pair of really nice quality external speakers for my laptop that do a wonderful job of separating both channels. Holy shit, this was seriously like hearing this album for the first time all over again. The things I paid the most particular attention to were the intense shred fests of both Choi and Matt, and while this floored me, you can really hear so many nuanced little back harmonies where Borth shines wonderfully.

Some examples, I think this type of selective listening (while fun for all tracks) is extremely enlightening for To Our Unborn Daughters and Crushing Destroyer. If you have two external speakers, lay one of them flat so that all sound is muffled or mostly inaudible to allow free reign upon your ears on the other channel. Listen to these songs twice, one in each channel, and pay particular attention to the ridiculous guitar riffs that explode from the speakers. Seriously, I usually listen to this album on full blast while singing along and so the guitar tracks kind of morph into a massacre on the senses, but when isolated they are delicately insane and complex.

I was inspired by the Bandits recent shows to do this so I could have an idea of what the fuck they were playing on Daughters and holy shit listen to from about 3:45 onward, Matt is playing some impossible metal sweeping stuff and Choi is going nuts with tremelo. Another key point is the breakdown riot in Destroyer...guitars are fighting for attention but meld together wonderfully. Sorry, I'm rambling a little but this is baffling me right now. I would suggest this to everyone who loves this album, its listening to it in a whole new ball game.

Discuss other things you find or completely disregard this post if you feel I'm a little teenage girl creaming my panties for no reason.

P.S. - but seriously, "Money culture mother train" in destroyer, I didn't realize Borth was singing in such a high laughable falsetto...they should do an acapella project.

...bottom line, this production is incredibly meticulous and genius.

I always prefer listening to my albums with good quality headphones. Both channels are so clear; it's a joy.
Whenever i play a Bandits CD in my car i'm very disappointed because i can't enjoy the crazy and meticulous arrangements they come up with.

Another way to get even more from your hearing sense is to listen to it again, while laying in bed and being completely calm. Every note reveals itself tenfold.

Pal-treaux is great for this sort of "active listening", try that one ;)

instead of laying a speaker down, just switch the balance right or left ... virtually all media players have the option, you'll hear nothing but the left or right channel

there are also programs to eliminate the middle channel ... basically making a copy of the track minus the vocals, drums, bass

Can you name any of these programs specifically? I'd really like to get a hold of one, and that's kind of a weird thing to attempt to search for.
